Mount Horeb Area Historical Society

Since 1975, the Mount Horeb Area Historical Society has collected, protected and shared the history of southwestern Dane County’s Driftless area.

MHAHS currently holds over 25,000 artifacts, over 1,500 linear feet of documents and paper records, and at least 30,000 photographs, representing nearly 200 years of local history. From a Boy Scout soap box derby car, to decades of Village tax rolls, to Mount Horeb’s “first troll” (the “Chicken Thief”), to ornately decorated Norwegian immigrant trunks, this collection is as wide-ranging and unique as the peoples and histories who make our piece of Wisconsin so special.

Just three years ago, after over a decade of planning and fundraising, this hardworking small town Society opened the Driftless Historium History Center –an unexpectedly big-time museum in the heart of Mount Horeb’s historic downtown.

The Driftless Historium is a three-building facility housing climate-controlled archive and artifact storage, a research room, two exhibit galleries, a program room (that also serves as an art gallery) and a small gift shop. Each year, MHAHS hosts a variety of lectures, workshops and other educational opportunities for adults and children. We also participate in local festivals, events and parades.

With growth and expansion, of course, come increased expenses.  MHAHS is a private, nonprofit entity. We receive no public funding. MHAHS relies on Membership dues, museum admission fees, gift shop revenues, rental income from a second floor apartment, and—our foundation—the continued generosity of our community and supporters.

We are always looking for creative ways to raise funds.

We are excited and honored to partner with author and historian Kathleen Ernst and Group Travel Directors to offer this exclusive trip of a lifetime.

Every person who embarks on this Scandinavian journey will simultaneously

be supporting MHAHS via an integrated commission fee.

“Folk Art, Fjords and Fiddles” is a fun and meaningful way that you can help MHAHS and the Driftless Historium continue the Work of History for another 45 years!
